In the traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu, as in all other Kung Fu styles, there was no graduation system, but the system worked as a family system. Graduations, like belts in different colours originated mainly later in Japanese martial arts.
Teaching without graduation was possible earlier, as a master usually did not teach more than 10 students, who lived with him as in a family. Accordingly, the master did always know exactly about the progress of his students. In modern times, since a master often has to teach more than 100 students and no longer live with them, this system is no longer fully applicable, because he can impossible remember, who he was teaching or what students were not present at some day. This is also one of the reasons for the confusion in Wing Chun lessons in Hong Kong, where the old system is often still applied with a chaotic result.
The Tao Chan Wing Chun Organization maintains and strengthens the Confucianism-based family principle. So, the relationships between Sifu and students (Todai) and also between older and younger students are built like in a real family. Anyone, who has entered earlier, regardless of graduation, is in traditional way always considered of higher position than a younger student.
Nevertheless, in the modern sense, a graduation system and exams has been introduced to maintain and test the performance standard of the students. In contrast to other organizations, the exams are always carried out intensively with each individual and not as mass processing after payment.
The graduation system is divided into 9 student levels and 10 teacher levels.
The 7th student level can already be active as a junior assistant trainer, the 9th level student can with a special permit already open a school. The Sifu title can be obtained at the earliest with the second teacher level after successful examination.
Up to the 6th student level the first and second form are taught, from the 7th student level the 3rd form is taught. Which is by the way extraordinary, since this form is often taught by many other organizations only after 10 years, but at the TCWCO ready after 2 years.
The 3rd teacher level has already learned the complete wooden dummy after less than 10 years, which often takes 20 years in other organizations. Also, the long pole and double knives form are already completely finished up to the 5th master level.
The Tao Chan Wing Chun Organization is the only Wing Chun Organization in the world, that teaches beyond the Double knives essential internal, advanced and spiritual concepts of the Wing Chun of Eternal Spring from the South Shaolin Monastery, which have their origin in Chan Buddhism. This takes place in the teacher levels 6-10.
